Background of the Study

Stress is a prevalent issue among nursing students, especially during clinical postings. These clinical placements are a core component of nursing education, intended to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills. However, they also pose significant emotional, psychological, and physical challenges for students (Oluwatoyin et al., 2023). Clinical postings require nursing students to engage with real patients, handle high-pressure situations, and adapt to the fast-paced healthcare environment, which can create a stressful learning atmosphere. Studies have shown that stress levels during clinical postings can affect students' academic performance, mental health, and overall well-being (Alzahrani & Asiri, 2023).

The nature of nursing education demands a high level of competence and emotional resilience, but the pressure to meet these demands can lead to burnout, anxiety, and fatigue among students (Chukwuemeka et al., 2023). Furthermore, factors such as inadequate support from clinical instructors, heavy workload, long shifts, and emotional distress from patient care are some of the primary contributors to the stress experienced by nursing students during clinical training (Opara & Olajide, 2024).

The University of Uyo College of Nursing, like many other nursing schools globally, faces challenges related to managing student stress in clinical settings. This study will investigate the stress levels among nursing students during their clinical postings and examine the specific stressors they encounter. By identifying these factors, the study aims to provide recommendations for interventions to improve the students' learning experiences and mental well-being, ensuring a healthier and more supportive educational environment (Adeleke et al., 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Stress is a common problem among nursing students, particularly during clinical placements, where they are expected to perform at a high standard under significant pressure. Nursing students often report feeling overwhelmed by the demands of their clinical environment, which can negatively impact their academic performance and mental health. Despite the growing awareness of stress among students, there remains a lack of comprehensive research focusing on the specific stressors faced by nursing students at the University of Uyo College of Nursing. Moreover, previous studies have predominantly focused on stress in general educational settings, with limited attention paid to the unique stress factors in nursing clinical settings (Michele & Kemi, 2024).

The failure to address stress during clinical placements can have far-reaching consequences, including burnout, decreased retention rates, and impaired clinical competencies (Ajayi et al., 2024). While stress management interventions are crucial, understanding the underlying causes of stress among nursing students in this context is essential to developing effective strategies. This study, therefore, seeks to fill this gap by assessing the stress levels among nursing students during clinical placements at the University of Uyo College of Nursing. The study will highlight the stressors specific to this context and provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and healthcare institutions aiming to improve nursing education and student well-being.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the levels of stress experienced by nursing students during clinical postings in the University of Uyo College of Nursing.

2. To identify the main stressors faced by nursing students during their clinical placements.

3. To evaluate the effectiveness of existing stress management strategies employed by the institution.

Research Questions

1. What are the stress levels among nursing students during clinical postings in the University of Uyo College of Nursing?

2. What are the main stressors that nursing students face during their clinical placements?

3. How effective are the current stress management strategies implemented by the University of Uyo College of Nursing?

Research Hypotheses

1. There is a significant level of stress among nursing students during clinical postings at the University of Uyo College of Nursing.

2. There are specific stressors that contribute to high levels of stress during clinical placements among nursing students.

3. Current stress management strategies are not effective in significantly reducing stress levels among nursing students.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nursing students at the University of Uyo College of Nursing during their clinical placements. It will assess the stress levels of students in their second, third, and final years of study. The study will be limited to the data collected from surveys and interviews with students and clinical instructors. One limitation of the study is that it will not consider the broader social and personal factors influencing stress, such as family life or financial challenges, which may also affect students' stress levels.

Definitions of Terms

• Stress: A state of mental or emotional strain resulting from challenging or adverse situations (Abubakar et al., 2023).

• Clinical Posting: A period in nursing education where students work in healthcare settings to gain practical experience under supervision (Oluwaseun et al., 2023).

• Burnout: Physical or mental collapse caused by overwork or stress, often resulting in fatigue, reduced performance, and emotional detachment (Kehinde et al., 2024).
